Ski Club President's Message

As I write this message, it is the middle of December, the temps are in the 40s, and there is a light drizzle falling outside my window. I hope all of us who have a passion for striding through the Northern Kettle Moraine on freshly groomed trails, on a brisk, blue-sky/blue kick wax day, can create enough positive spirit and energy to bring a 14 inch snowfall over Greenbush, USA real soon.

Over the summer, some long-time members of the Northern Kettle Moraine Ski Club approached me about taking on the role as president of the club, as no one had stepped forward to take the reins from Tom Lawn (who by the way, provided our club with outstanding direction and many accomplishments as well as three great snow years in a row). Of course, when it comes to stepping up for one more volunteer leadership position, it would have been very easy to say I just don't have time to be president of this club. But, as I have come to know the members of this club and their passion for skiing at Greenbush, I knew plenty of help and support would accompany my acceptance.

My leadership plan is to keep our club focused on our core purpose of maintaining and grooming our Greenbush trails, having a strong youth program, and introducing more people to the joys and health benefits of the silent sport we love. There are some great club initiatives and activities planned to move us down that trail.

At our recent Fall Membership Meeting, the club learned about the $25,000 matching trail enhancement grant we were awarded, which will enable us to do some much needed trail improvements that will level and widen parts of the trail system that should assist grooming, provide greater safety, and generally enhance our skiing experience. Final plans for this improvement will be done this winter/spring with the work starting late summer. We will need many volunteers for this project.

The youth ski team continues to be a huge success. We have dedicated coaches, supportive parents and club members, and our number of participants continues to grow. This is the future of our club and our sport, which makes this initiative so vital.

We have a dedicated board of directors developing and planning the club's activities and managing the resources. They are a hard-working, get it done group.

If you are not currently a member, I want to personally invite you to join us at Greenbush for a piece of Nordic Heaven and join us in our mission of promoting Nordic skiing in the Northern Kettles. If you are a member, I want to encourage you to become active in club activities, as the success of our club and the quality of the Greenbush Trails depends on commitment and resources that come from each and every member.

We need for everyone to do their secret, moonlight snow dance, as it's time to scrape the storage wax off and get out there!

Clark Reinke,
President, Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic Ski Club
